Gheysens ’89 Participates in 2019 SAVI

Posted April 10th, 2019

1989 graduate and 2019 Mendel Medal Recipient, Chris Gheysens found his way back onto campus and also back in the headlines…

The Vineland native and proud St. Augustine graduate played a big part in SAVI 2019 hosted by his alma mater.  The Student Augustinian Values Institute brought Augustinian Schools from around the world to the campus of St. Augustine Prep.  Learning of Chris’ connection with Wawa, the students were treated to some of the company’s finest food and drink.  Most importantly, Chris also addressed the students of SAVI through a video (embedded below), sharing how the Augustinian Values learned at the Prep have continued to benefit him in his personal and professional life. The students quickly learned of Chris’ values serving as the foundation of his rise to the position of C.E.O. of Wawa.  Overall, the message was a lesson on the direct correlation between Augustinian Values and servant leadership.

In addition – Chris, who already holds a graduate degree from St. Joseph’s University, will be presented with an honorary degree as part of the school’s 2019 Commencement Ceremonies.  He will be sharing the honor with three influential peers:

  • Anne Welsh McNulty, an investment executive, philanthropist and advocate for women’s leadership
  • Valerie V. Gay, a performing artist, civic leader, arts advocate and community builder
  • Francis H. Trainer, Jr. ’68, a business ethics pioneer and investment leader

He has also been tabbed to speak at SJU’s ceremony for those earning graduate degrees which is scheduled for Saturday, May 18, 2019.  St. Joseph’s University President, Dr. Mark Reed added, “Chris Gheysens has been an outstanding steward for Wawa, a brand whose place in the hearts of Philadelphians has deep roots.  His careful approach to expansion and dedication to maintaining a company culture that values customers and employees is an inspiration for how business should be done.”
