The Fire Still Burns: St. Augustine Prep’s Class of 1964

Posted April 12th, 2019

1964 was a memorable year…

The Beatles release their first US album, “Introducing the Beatles” and make their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show.

Cassius Clay, aka Muhammad Ali, beats Sonny Liston for the World Heavyweight Championship.

The Ford Motor Company introduces the first Ford Mustang.

Maybe even more importantly, Joe and John Imbesi shared a high school experience with the second graduating class of St. Augustine Prep.

Fifty-five years later, the Imbesi brothers (Joe ‘64, John ‘64, Larry ‘65, Mark ‘74) and their spouses hosted a gathering at Joe and his wife Orla’s home in Florida. Over 50 Alumni, alumni parents and loyal friends of the Prep were able to meet present leaders of the school and reminisce with Hermit Brothers from varying eras about their shared experience.

“St. Augustine will always have a special place in my heart,” said Joe Imbesi. “Many of my life-long friends are my Hermit Brothers. The emphasis on strong traditional values and Brotherhood breeds relationships that last for decades. I credit my family and that experience for helping to shape me into the man I am today.”

Fr. Robert J. Murray, Head of School, Dr. John J. Mahoney, legendary faculty member and father of Sean (’93) and Coach Paul Rodio (’70) enjoyed the company of 15 Hermit Brothers ranging from the Class of 1964 through 2004.

“We are blessed to have alumni who have maintained relationships with their brothers from multiple generations,” said Fr. Murray. “These men, even decades from their experience at St. Augustine, are valuable examples for the education of the Christian Gentleman.”
