Director’s Note

Last year, our production of Mamma Mia! focused on a mother-daughter relationship. Because of this, it only seemed fitting that this year’s production should highlight a father-son one. Fathers want the best for their sons, even if their sons can’t initially understand their intentions, their methods of achieving this, or their seemingly clashing personalities. At the core of this musical, as Edward ages and Will marries and expects a son, is the question “What makes a good father?” How does one navigate the weight of fatherhood and juggle the responsibility to oneself and one’s loved ones? What sacrifices does a father make, and are they always recognized? Many young boys search for heroes in their lives. Does their father fill this role or challenge it? As such, this play focuses on being the “hero of your own story,” sometimes making choices that empower you and others you regret. However, knowing that you have the ability to craft your own story for your own betterment and those around you is powerful. Storytelling is what binds us with our past and our future. While one’s stories, especially those of a parent to a child, sometimes entail embellishments, these are not meant to be mistruths. Rather, their purpose is to enliven and entertain; instruct in a non-didactic manner; and, more simply put, make memorable to those audiences for which they are intended. We tell stories to keep memories of people and events alive and to empower us in our own present! Mrs. Jodie Zielinski Director, Big Fish

Thank You

The cast and crew of Big Fish would like to thank the Administration, Faculty, and Staff of both St. Augustine Prep and Our Lady of Mercy Academy, especially Father Murray and Mrs. Coyle for their support of the Arts in our schools. A special thanks to Mrs. Stacey Cable, Mrs. Karrie Davis, and Mr. Manny Dijamco for production of our tickets, playbook, poster, photography, and social media posts, and to the St. Augustine Prep Facilities Department for construction, storage, and transportation of our set and props. Additional thanks are extended to Mrs. Battin for arranging transportation for our students during rehearsals and performances. And to The Landis Theater for getting the chance to perform again in such a beautiful and professional space. And, thanks and gratitude most of all to our parents, who are the backbone of our program. They feed us, they help with costumes, props, and scenery, they drive to and from rehearsals, and they donate their time (and gift baskets), among so many other things!

We are forever appreciative for all that our parents do for us! 4

Congratulations to the Cast, Crew, and Musicians of Big Fish –The Artists of Today and Tomorrow!

Be the hero of your story as you “forge ahead” (St. Augustine) in your journey “out there on the road” (Edward Bloom) and find your own truth (Veritas). St. Augustine advises: “You know that we are travelers. You ask, what is ‘walking?’ Briefly it means to make progress. There is someone inside you who is pleased with humility. Let him test you, and test yourself as well. If you want to reach what you are not yet, always be dissatisfied with yourself. For wherever you are pleased with yourself, that is where you remain. If you say, ‘that’s enough,’ you are lost. Always keep adding more, always walk, always forge ahead; do not stop on the road, do not go back, do not leave the road.” (Augustine, Sermon 169, 18) “It’s not about a destination [...] The road is something that’s in you. A need. You don’t drive it–it drives you. Understand?” (Edward Bloom, Big Fish The Musical) Thank you all, Mrs. Zielinski
