Emmanuel Azuonwo: Why Did I Choose St. Augustine?

Posted November 1st, 2015

Many people have asked me the simple but complex question, “Why are you here at St. Augustine?” The reason for my presence at the Prep reaches deeper than most would realize. From a very young age I’ve always been told that I’m not big enough, I’m not fast enough, I’m not smart enough, and I don’t have what it takes. To be the best and stay there, sweat, hard work, dedication and pain are required. So many different people have tried to get me to be average, lead an average life, do average things, and fit in with the crowd. Simply put, that isn’t me. It’s not who I am. I’m not comfortable with average. I strive to be the best at everything I do, and I know the only way for me to reach my full potential academically, athletically, and spiritually is for me to join the Augustinian brotherhood.

The Prep provides me with opportunities like no other school I think of can. It is the type of community that I believe every individual should strive to be a part of. I’ve worked so hard to be where I am at this moment, and I thank God for blessing me with the opportunity to come to such a prestigious school. I am here to leave my mark, and I want to accomplish things that no one else has. I am here to chase my legacy and fight for my personal legend. I came to St. Augustine to show, not only other people that they were wrong about my abilities, but to prove to myself that I can do anything I imagine. I am here to make a point. I believe that I will be a rose from concrete. I am here to prove that what was once thought of as impossible, is finally possible— not just for me but for anyone who thinks they don’t have a chance of living out their dreams.
