31 Students Help to Make a Difference

Posted June 25th, 2015

The Making a Difference Third Semester class, lead by Mr. Valore, aimed to expose the 31 students involved to several different service elements and stewardship initiatives.  The young men started off by researching local charities and non-profit service groups and then creating a report on them. The students were then treated to a guest lecturer (Mr. Forrest’s sister) who just returned from a Peace Corps mission in Fiji.

One day was dedicated to solely to the importance of nutrition.  The class analyzed the potential reasons for obesity in the U.S. and focused on the Katie Couric Documentary “Fed Up.”  Students broke down their dietary habits and addressed ways that they can make a difference through their eating schedule.

Another day, the class learned about soil erosion and undertook a project to create an erosion block in a much-needed area of campus.

Another fun project saw the class creating their own video PSAs.  The :30 to :45-second long commercials were centric to the needs of the communities in which we live.

The Making a Difference class successfully focused on what we can do to affect positively our community and ourselves.
