A Caritas Project Request to Support Community Food Bank and Empty Bowls Movement

Posted February 12th, 2013

As part of their Caritas project, St. Augustine Prep seniors Matt Petrella and Ryan Gerace are requesting help with theirefforts to fight childhood hunger.

Are you aware that 17 million children currently live in food insecure households? And, that scientific evidence has shown that children who are deprived of a healthy diet are prone to illness and learning problems? It has also been suggested that these children are less likely to become productive adult citizens.

On March 3, 2013, we will be joining forces with students and faculty from the Seaview Elementary School in Linwood, NJ, to host an Empty Bowls event.

Empty Bowls is an international movement to help organizations fight hunger by raising money and awareness about the issues of hunger and food security that exist even in our own community. The basic idea is simple: participants will create ceramic bowls which will be used to serve a basic meal of soup and bread, which will be donated by local restaurants and chefs. For a minimum donation, guests who attend our gathering will select a ceramic bowl to use the day of the event and keep as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. The money raised will be donated to an organization working to end hunger and food insecurity. We have chosen the Community Food Bank of South Jersey as the beneficiary of our event and have requested that monies be designated to their childhood hunger programs.

Seaview School has already begun creating the hand-made bowls but there is much more work to be done to make our event successful. We are seeking donations of soups and breads from area restaurants as well as donations to purchase the necessary supplies.

Assistance from local businesses and individuals is the key to our success. Attached is a list of items of which we are in need. You can view the list here. Anything you could do would be greatly appreciated. Should you need to contact us, please do so via email at filltheirbowls@gmail.com.

Thank you for your consideration and we hope to see you on March 3rd at Seaview School!

Sincerely,
Matt Petrella Ryan Gerace
