Posted December 16th, 2011

“Where was the first stock market in the United States?”  “What is the name of the city in Virginia that is named after a Greek God?”  On Thursday, December 15, the St. Augustine Prep Academic Team was forced to try to answer these types of questions as they travelled to Oakcrest High School for their first competition of the 2011-12 academic year.  The Prep fielded two teams and competed against 15 other Atlantic County schools and a total of 20 teams.  The Prep’s Blue Team, consisting of junior Conor Murphy and seniors Joe Rha, Andrew Moffa, and Mike Welch, took home second place.  They correctly answered 48 questions, which covered a wide range of school topics, from math to history to astronomy.  They lost to the 1st place team from Mainland Regional High School by one question.  The Prep’s White Team, consisting of junior Frank Scavelli and seniors Colan Rodgers and John Sinclair, finished in 16th place.  The second competition of the year will take place at Egg Harbor Township High School in January.  The Academic Team is led by moderator Mr. Cappuccio.
