Caritas In Action; Four Seniors And Man’s Best Friend

Posted September 29th, 2017

Every 28 days, Animal Aid travels back to New Jersey with an average of 250 animals that have been saved from shelters in Georgia.  Upon arrival, they are given to receiving rescues who have previously selected the animals headed their way.  Animals are only transported if a receiving rescue has already been determined.  This transport model has occurred on a monthly basis since January of 2011 saving nearly 20,000 animals.

At the heart of this operation is St. Augustine Prep senior, Matthew Talbot.  Matthew serves as director of Animal Aid’s junior division which he founded at the age of nine!  Upon attending St. Augustine, he was able to further broaden his audience through his senior Caritas project.  Matthew mentioned, “I was passionate about Animal Aid but combining my efforts to be a part of my Caritas project took it to another level. Not only was I able to bring further awareness to more people, but my hermit brothers who participated in the project now share in my passion to help animals and make an impact in the community.”  Joining Matthew in capping off 100 hours of service through the event were classmates John Keane, Owen Lang, and Jared Defoney.  The four seniors facilitated the event which drew a crowd of 150 attendees eager to shower their new furry friends with love.

Adoptions were handled by a collection of receiving rescues who made their way to Richland:  Paws Crossed, Woof Love, Puppies & More, Morris Humane Society of Atlantic City, Wags, Pets Plus PA, and many more.  Several of the dogs left St. Augustine with their new foster parents while the remaining animals departed with their respective adoption agencies to join a family at a later time.

The heart-warming event embodied the fabric of what St. Augustine Prep’s Caritas program was founded upon, meaningful service to the community.  This project joined a long-list of the Class of 2018’s Caritas efforts which amongst others have included the recently completed BEACH program involving the Atlantic City Boys & Girls Club and Operation K9 Kevlar which brings awareness to the safety of our community’s K9 officers.

We are immensely proud of all of our seniors and their passion towards continuing the tradition of the Caritas project!
