Cathedral Kitchen: 27 Years of Hermits Serving the Community
Posted September 20th, 2016
In 1976 Bishop James L. Schad opened the Cathedral Kitchen in the basement of the Cathedral School to feed the most needy in Camden and its surrounding areas.
The “Cathedral Kitchen” has since moved from the tight quarters of its original location to a modernized facility on Federal Street in Camden. Instead of serving 200 people as was done in the early years, 400 or more people are now able to enjoy a comfortable night and a nutritious meal. Brother David Graber M.SS.CC. began teaching at St. Augustine in 1989, that same year he began taking juniors from the Prep to help feed the hungry. Twenty seven years later, almost every week, another group of juniors travels to Camden continuing the legacy of service and volunteerism that has defined the students of St. Augustine.
During the day, Cathedral Kitchen operates a culinary arts school which, after successful graduation, provides training for many city residents to attain a career in food preparation. Bro. David often points out to the students that individuals well into their eighties and children as young as those in their infancy visit the Kitchen for a good meal because they are hungry and poor. Clients begin lining up nearly an hour before doors open; for many the upcoming hot meal will be the only meal they receive on that particular day. The impact of the experience is felt by all who are involved; many of those on the receiving end will go out of their way to thank the student volunteers for their kindness. The students are particularly moved by the number of children who pass through the kitchen – many who are only in their infant years.
This experience is not new to the juniors as this is a journey that began during their sophomore year. The outset of this journey tasks our sophomores with spending 3 days living in the city and working in various retinues for their retreat known as Metanoia Week – meaning to have a change of heart.
Cathedral Kitchen is also most appreciative to the Prep’s Austin Society for their annual collection of kitchen supplies – these supplies are a great asset in helping their public service.
Thank you to Brother Dave and the countless Hermits past, present and future who have actively served our community!
