College Guidance Follow-Up Information for Junior Parents
Posted March 14th, 2014
Preparation is the name of the game come March; specifically in the arena of college readiness. While our seniors are in the midst of preparing for advancement to college, juniors are formulating plans of attack on the college application process.
In Hermit tradition, the brotherhood of the Prep senior-student body is guiding the way for the upcoming rising seniors. The class of 2014 has done an excellent job of embracing the copious assignments linked with applying to college and their efforts are paying off in college acceptances and merit and athletic scholarships. As of March 14, the senior class has reported 535 college acceptances, and over $16 million in merit scholarships.
On March 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the dining hall, the College Guidance Department held its annual Junior Parent meeting and 104 junior parents were in attendance. Director Mrs. Brooke Coyle, along with College Guidance Counselors Mr. Mark Reardon and Mrs. Carol Castelli discussed an array of topics concerning the college application process; from college selection, to the application components, to financial realities. The presentation also included a demonstration of Family Connection, the St. Augustine Prep college guidance communications site. The attendees were encouraged to log on, with their sons, to investigate the many college search and application tools available to them.
Additionally, each parent was presented with a personalized folder containing pertinent college information, including upcoming summer tours of notable colleges and universities located in Boston, Maryland, Delaware, and Washington D.C., (read about these tours here and register here), as well as a calendar outlining in detail action items for each month in preparation for the college process. The junior calendar, which is created yearly, also highlights senior class members and depicts where a few have been accepted. You can see the calendar here.
The evening concluded with a comprehensive question and answer period followed with breakout group discussions on academies, ROTC opportunities, and athletics.
