Dining Services Bake Cookies For The Troops

Posted December 2nd, 2016

On Friday, December 2nd Paul Barr and Mary Smail from the Dining Services team continued the tradition of baking chocolate chip cookies for our troops abroad.  Mr. Barr and Mrs. Smail began baking cookies for military members in 2011 when approached by current Executive Director of IT and Communications, Mrs. Broomell.  Mrs. Broomell’s son, Frank ’05 was deployed as a member of the Marines in Afghanistan and she was interested in sending him the famous Prep cookies.  Mrs. Smail and Mr. Barr (served in the Army from 1999-2000) immediately offered to bake the cookies and they were met with high praise from the Marines.  Frank was deployed again in 2012 which sparked the tradition which continues to this day. The dining service team will whip up approximately 250 cookies in that single day.

The cookies are sent to our deployed service men and women through the Operation Yellow Ribbon organization. Mr. Barr and Mrs. Smail truly carry the fire and help spread Christmas cheer to those who won’t be home for the holidays.
