Greyson Sapio ’21 Adds a Beach Volleyball Court to Campus

Posted April 15th, 2021

Senior Greyson Sapio has joined the long list of Hermit students who work towards the rank of Eagle Scout. As with every Boy Scout who works towards this honor, he was tasked with planning, developing, and leading a service project otherwise known as the Eagle Project. In wanting to make our school campus better for all his Hermit Brothers and as a commitment to the Prep community, Greyson decided to build a beach volleyball court on the St. Augustine Prep campus. By selecting a beach volleyball court as his project, he saw it as a way to leave his mark on the school campus and would give him the opportunity to make an everlasting impact on the Hermit Brotherhood.

Greyson had to carefully prepare the location behind Augustian Hall. This location was picked for its proximity to campus without being obtrusive to the main campus. The planning portion of the project Greyson realized was most challenging. Working with facilities to plan materials and coordinating construction equipment were new concepts as well as fundraising. Thanks to the Student Government who organized a Core Values Dress Down Day to help raise funds for the project. After putting in the hard work of clearing sod, digging and flattening the dirt, and adding sand, Greyson and about twenty-five fellow Hermit volunteers took three days of their Spring Break to make strides on the new campus project. The poles are being installed this week with pole sleeves as it will make it easy to remove them in the winter months. Greyson credits his Hermit Brothers for their dedication and believes the project would not be complete without them as well as facilities, the Advancement office, and the whole student body.

The lessons he had learned throughout his four years at St. Augustine ran in unison with the skills he had attained as a Boy Scout. “A large part of moving through the Boy Scouts to becoming an Eagle Scout is evolving your leadership skills and the Prep has a similar vision with developing the same leadership skills.” credits Greyson. The classes and esteemed teachers especially the Leadership and Concentration class from the sophomore year were crucial to Greyson. The class taught him how to get a group of people to work together on a common goal. In his own words regarding leadership, “Having faculty who are leaders themselves like Mr. Cappuccio who was able to share how he has led the school through this pandemic school year has formed my ability to do this project .”

As Greyson approaches the final weeks of his time as a student at St. Augustine, it is clear that he has grown into an agent of change and has embraced the full concept of servant leadership. The Prep Community has been given so much to all the students and to be able to give back immediately to the community was satisfying for Greyson. Most importantly, in the Augustinian values of Veritas(truth), Unitas(unity), and Caritas(love) instilled at the Prep, the aspiring Aero Space engineer will miss the community feeling at St. Augustine Prep. As Greyson looks forward to attending Princeton University in the fall, he looks forward to coming back on campus and seeing his fellow Hermit Brothers enjoying the beach volleyball court.

The servant leadership displayed by Greyson is just one of the many hallmarks of a St. Augustine Prep student, take the next step towards joining the Brotherhood and become an agent of change!
