Help Needed: Muscular Dystrophy Association Summer Camp

Posted February 21st, 2012

Prep Community,

For the past two years I have really enjoyed serving as a Camp Counselor for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) of the Delaware Valley. It was during this time that I learned so much about the amazing strength that comes from a heart when other muscles in the body fail to perform. It’s the ideal world dreamed up by every young person with a muscular disease. It is where I witnessed countless acts of selflessness by campers, counselors, staff, and doctors that formed friendships forever and memories that will last a life time. Are you interested in experiencing the most amazing week of your summer?!

On June 9-16, the MDA of Delaware Valley is holding their annual MDA Summer Camp. The campers can just be themselves among friends; but, they can’t do this without the help of summer camp volunteers. If you are 16 years old or older, I invite you to join me in applying to be a MDA Camp Counselor – the MDA is looking for male volunteers for this 2012 summer camp. As a camp counselor you may work one-on-one with a camper 6-17 years old for the week, and serve as their camp buddy. Now I know what you are thinking; that sounds like tons of work! Surprisingly, it is more fun than work, and the things experienced while being a counselor will, undoubtedly, be life changing. They were for me.

Muscular Dystrophy affects everyone differently. Some may be in wheelchairs and other might need help from falling when their muscles give way. Don’t worry, the MDA trains you and it is amazing what you learn and how well you can do things. In my past two years, there was nothing that I couldn’t handle, so don’t worry. We also do things such as daily activities, casino night, the famous Friday dance, a bonfire and tons more! I used this as my Caritas project, and you can too! It looks great on a resume, and you will obtain many unforgettable life lessons.

Here is what you need to do: Contact Ms. Jamie Alexander, MDA Summer Camp Coordinator at or by phone at 610-325-5758 for an application. DON’T WAIT too long as you don’t want to miss this AMAZING opportunity.
