The school community mourns the passing of beloved educator and Augustinian Friar of the Allegrini Monastery at St. Augustine Prep, Fr. Joseph F. Girone, O.S.A.  The passionate Prep Faculty Member and devout Augustinian returned to the Lord on Saturday, February 13 at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, Mainland Campus in Pomona, NJ. He had served on the faculty at St. Augustine Prep since September 2016 and taught in the Theology and World Language Departments.

Fr. Girone arrived at St. Augustine Prep after a sabbatical leave in San Antonio, Texas at the Oblate School of Theology in the Ministry to Ministers Program. Prior to this time of renewal, he was Pastor of St. Nicholas of Tolentine Parish in the Bronx, NY for 10 years. His priestly service included the position of Associate Director of Hispanic Ministry, Diocese of Wilmington, Delaware before which he ministered as Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Staten Island, NY. Fr. Girone also served in the Augustinian missions as Pastor of San Jose Obrero Parish, Chulucanas Peru.

Ordained in 1981 his first assignment was Parochial Vicar St. Nicholas of Tolentine Parish in the Bronx, NY, and later as Vocation/Formation Director of Casa Tolentino which was the outreach of the Province of St. Thomas of Villanova for Hispanic vocations. Fr. Girone’s academic background includes a B.S. in Spanish/Education from Villanova University, and graduate degrees in Theology from the Washington Theological Union and in Church Management from the Villanova University School of Business.

He will be missed dearly by the entire school community, especially the many Hermit Brothers whose lives he has impacted through his wisdom and teachings in the classroom.
