Introducing College Prep Class

Posted August 26th, 2014

Embarking on a new academic year is an exciting time for all; students, faculty and administration. Over the summer months the Department of College Guidance and Counseling has been conscientiously developing a new initiative that will launch immediately at the start of the 2015 school year.

Lead by the Director of College Guidance and Counseling Mrs. Brooke Coyle, College Prep is a new class for senior students and it will take place during A and H periods.  Senior students, who elected to have a “free” period, will rotate through a series of instructional classes taught by College Guidance Counselors, Mrs. Brooke Coyle, Mrs. Carol Castelli, Mr. Damian Long, Mrs. Janice Deery and Mr. Mark Reardon.

“The goal of this program is to alleviate stress for both our students and their families,” says Mrs. Coyle, “And to teach our students to utilize the tools and resources they have available to them and help them achieve their college aspirations.”

College Prep has been designed to be a six week, comprehensive and content heavy program with the goal of engaging students in completing their college applications in time for meeting early admission deadlines.  During this allocated time within the school day, those senior students who are participating, will have access to college counselors and will complete The Common Application and work in Family Connection to firmly select the colleges they intend on applying to.  Additionally students will develop a high school resume, draft and make final edits of their college essay as well as complete any supplements required. Upon finalizing each task and review from a college counselor, students will be ready to submit.  Senior students who did not enroll in a “free” period will have full access to counselors during the school day and are encouraged to schedule time with their assigned advisor to complete their college applications.
