IT Help for the Start of the School Year

Posted September 12th, 2014

Did You Know:

1)      You should NOT share your school password. Even your best bud might do something in your computer account that violates the Prep’s Computer Acceptable Use Policy (found in the student handbook). If this happens, the owner of the account is the one who faces the Prep’s Disciplinarian. It is prohibited for any student to use a computer account that is not his.

2)      You can get your @hermits.org email delivered to any mobile device that can install the Gmail email App. Just put the  credentials Lastname.Firstname@hermits.org and your Prep email password (case sensitive) in the App.

3)      You need to have your Bradford Security App installed on your Tablet BEFORE bringing it on campus and trying to get a PrepWireless WiFi connection. Information can be found here for doing this procedure: https://www.hermits.com/document.doc?id=2108 and https://www.hermits.com/resources/technology-wifi-docs

4)      You have Cloud storage via your Hermits.org Google account already set up. This is a great collaboration platform to link up with your teachers and classmates. Access these brief video tutorials on using Google Drive. http://goo.gl/6gzu6u

5)      You have local network storage on the Prep’s computer system. If you want to store a file locally on the network, store it on the H:\ drive, Do NOT use the Documents folder which is usually the one presented to you as a default. This home drive (H:\) is a private drive and cannot be accessed by other students. It is available on any computer that you log into on campus. Since H:\ drive is not accessible by other students you may want to collaborate with, use your Google Drive Cloud storage for files you need to share.

6)      IT Support: If you are technologically challenged and need assistance from the IT department with regards to item #3 above, see Mr. Garufi Sr in the Forum tech office, Mr. Garufi Jr or Mr. Crandall Augustinian Hall tech offices in the 1st floor 30’s wing, or Mr. Griffiths in Scarpa building, office in Lab 24. For Windows laptop access to Prep WiFi bring the Drop Off form and the laptop to Mr. Garufi Sr. For MAC laptop, bring Drop Off form and the laptop to Mr. Garufi Jr. Drop Off form link is available in item 3# above.

7)      All school related printing should be done at home. The school cannot afford to assume printing costs for 700 students. When it comes to printing, think GREEN, save a tree!  As a consideration for students that have a temporarily inoperable printer at home, printers are accessible in the Study Commons and the computer labs. A printing budget of 20 pages per month is allowed and is reset to 20 each month. Certain computer classes or club activities requires a larger printing budget. A teacher can request from Mr. Garufi Sr. a larger printing budget for their students based on class needs.
