Jake Smith (’18) Leads Successful “Smash Childhood Cancer” Fundraiser

Posted May 9th, 2017

On Thursday, April 27th the St. Augustine Prep campus was abuzz as students had the chance to”Smash Childhood Cancer”. To help combat childhood cancer prep students paid $10 to take a few swings with a sledgehammer at junk cars on school grounds. The event was mastermind by Jake Smith (’18) as part of his Caritas Project.

Jake was inspired to create the fundraising event by his family friend and 10 year cancer survivor Cole Fitzgerald. Cole, now 13, who battled neuroblastoma as a child got to take a couple swings himself while also having the opportunity with the help of local firefighters to use the “jaws of life”.

All of the funds raised were donated to the Ronald McDonald House, where Smith is a member of the Teen Advisory Board, and Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, where Fitzgerald is an ALSF hero ambassador.

Smith noted “Teens love smashing things, so I thought if we decorated cars with cancer, teens could smash away cancer,” Smith said. “It’s a really cool way to bring awareness.”

If you didn’t have the chance to use the sledgehammer or would like to help a great cause visit the website below. Donations are still being accepted.
