Juniors Receive Tips on Writing College Essays
Posted March 22nd, 2013
On March 12, Mr. Stephen Merritt, Dean of Enrollment Management at Villanova University, presented a workshop to the members of the Class of 2014 on how to write an effective essay for their college applications. Mr. Merritt explained that very selective colleges such as Villanova receive many times more applications for admission than can be accommodated. Often the determining factor among applicants with similar academic scores is the personal essay.
Mr. Merritt read several samples of applicants’ essays and allowed the juniors to discuss what made these writings exceptional. He also highlighted effective writing techniques for the admissions essay, as well as styles and topics that are better avoided.
This information should prove to be very helpful as the juniors begin in earnest the college application process.
