Klotz ’27 and McElroy ’27 Shine at the Penn Honors Extravaganza and Palestra Honor Band

Posted February 2nd, 2025

Music has a unique way of bringing people together, and for Jack Klotz ’27 and Hugh McElroy ’27, their recent experiences at the Penn Honors Extravaganza and the Palestra Honor Band did just that. These two talented students represented St. Augustine Prep’s Fine Arts program on a grand stage, showcasing their musical abilities and dedication to their craft.

A Prestigious Musical Experience

At the Penn Honors Extravaganza, Jack and Hugh joined fellow top high school musicians from across the region for an immersive day of rehearsals, workshops, and collaboration. Under the direction of distinguished conductors, they fine-tuned their skills and prepared for a culminating performance at St. Mary’s Church on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. This experience not only strengthened their musicianship but also connected them with peers who share their passion for the performing arts.

Their musical journey didn’t stop there. Jack and Hugh were also selected to perform in the Palestra Honor Band, an esteemed group that had the unique opportunity to play at the historic Palestra—one of college basketball’s most storied venues. Before a packed crowd at a Penn basketball game, they delivered a powerful performance of the National Anthem, marking an unforgettable moment in their musical careers.

A Testament to the Prep’s Fine Arts Program

The success of Jack and Hugh is a reflection of the strength and dedication of St. Augustine Prep’s Fine Arts program. Led by passionate educators like Mr. Glenn Muller, Stage Band Director and Fine Arts Teacher, the program encourages students to develop their talents, embrace musical excellence, and pursue opportunities beyond the classroom.

“We are incredibly proud of Jack and Hugh for their hard work and commitment,” said Mr. Muller. “Their participation in these prestigious events is not only a personal achievement but also a testament to the high level of musicianship we strive to cultivate at the Prep.”

Looking Ahead

Opportunities like the Penn Honors Extravaganza and the Palestra Honor Band serve as inspiration for all students involved in the Fine Arts at St. Augustine Prep. They highlight the impact of music education, the value of dedication, and the incredible doors that open when students are encouraged to pursue their passions.

Congratulations to Jack and Hugh on this well-earned recognition! The Prep community looks forward to seeing their continued growth as musicians and leaders.
