Prep Students Raise Money to Fight Blood Cancers

Posted April 4th, 2015

The Interact Club’s third annual Battle of the Classes has come to an end. Victory belongs to the sophomore and the freshman classes! The freshman class, led by the enthusiasm of club members Roman Brooks and Joshua Blackley, was victorious for their unwavering daily participation in the campaign. The sophomore class was victorious for securing the single largest donation. The entire sophomore class along with the entire freshman class will enjoy a complimentary dress down day on Thursday, April 23rd. Mark your calendars!

Together, we have raised $1,518.47 as part of the nationwide campaign called Pennies for Patients, which is part of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Youth Program. This has earned our school a “Champions of Change Banner!” 27,000 schools nationwide participate in this program; over 1000 of these schools are in New Jersey. Our collection campaign, which ran from March 18th to April 1st, will help people with blood cancers like leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma.  Donations will help fund 480 researchers in 15 different countries on five continents via the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). By raising funds, St Augustine Prep has helped families in the LLS financial aid program, too.  The money raised can help pay for medicine, the doctor, and other treatment-related expenses.

Sophomores raised a total of $822.21, with the single largest donation by Dylan Kott – thank you! Freshman raised $366.55 while juniors raised $262.87, and seniors raised $66.84.  Everyone that participated should feel very proud of himself because with every penny, nickel, dime, quarter, or dollar you donated, you helped many cancer patients. Give yourselves a round of applause! Also, thank you to Ms. Lorraine Dutta and the Art Club, who contributed $30 from their popcorn sales on behalf of the sophomore class. Finally, special thanks goes out to freshman Roman Brooks and Joshua Blackley who counted coins every single day afterschool during this three week effort. Hermit pride!
