Senior Mother/Son Communion Breakfast Creates Everlasting Bonds
Posted March 22nd, 2015
As a touching way to being the final two month’s of the Class of 2015’s Prep career, the Senior Mother/Son Communion Breakfast was held on Sunday, March 15th. Fr. Donald Reilly, President of the school, celebrated the Mass which included a touching moment where students presented their mothers with letters they wrote to them. After the Mass, Mrs. Deborah Asselta, Chair of the English Department, spoke to the nearly 200 in attendance and brought tears to many mothers’ eyes and pierced their souls with memories of their sons as they face graduation from The Prep and entrance to college.
The speech began with the metaphor of the gents and mothers “Tale” they have experienced on their journey as part of The Prep Community.
The mothers were separately addressed reminding them there is “Nothing like a mother’s love” knowing they sacrificed much while “holding him up when he was weak and while reveling in his accomplishments.” They were told “now is the time to let the baby who is now a man fly from out your wings where he will put all your lessons to work. These lessons were taught by the mothers and continued in formation by The Prep.” The mothers were reminded “We as mothers must spend our life readying our children to leave…you have done that and sending him to St. Augustine helped in that preparation.”
The gents were reminded to “notice and respond” to “tap the rock” and to “push towards excellence” modeled from the administration and faculty here at the Prep. The power of the brotherhood was reinforced through two stories. The first story was from a student perspective, the other a personal story of Mrs. Asselta’s “near death experience” during third semester when, through the help of our Lord, and the pleading of 25 Prep boys, her life was spared.
The speech ended with remnants of quotes from St. Augustine’s Sermon and the prayer to St. Augustine as they were reminded to keep God as the governor of their choices.
