Prep Students Volunteer at iCan Bike Camp

Posted July 10th, 2015

iCan Bike Camp is area program that assists training those with disabilities to ride a conventional 2-wheeled bike, with the goal of becoming a lifelong independent rider. Collin Campbell ’16 volunteered at this summer’s program, held at Camden County College from June 29th to July 3rd.

Joined by fellow Prep student and brother Justin ’17, as well as Ethan Mabilog ’16, Collin says that the camp was a success. “The iCan Ride Camp is just as a great of an experience for volunteers as it is for the riders and family.” Collin goes on to say that, “Throughout the week, we get closer and closer with our buddies, and by the end of the week, when they can finally get up on 2 wheels, it’s one of the best feelings in the world.”

The bicycles are adapted for use in the specialized instructional program, where trained staff teaches those with disabilities how to ride a bike. Riders attend the same 75-minute session each day for five consecutive days, where they are physically assisted and encouraged by two volunteer “spotters” or Bike Buddies. Over the course of the 5-day camp the adapted bike is adjusted to gradually introduce more instability in an effort to challenge riders at their own individual pace. The week is concluded with a touching and inspiring awards ceremony!
