Why Start Learning Algebra in Middle School?

Posted April 22nd, 2016

Algebra is known as a “gateway” subject, because it underpins higher math concepts like calculus, geometry and trigonometry. That’s one of the reasons it is necessary to build a good foundation in it as soon as possible (preferably in middle school). Algebra also helps us solve everyday problems like reducing a recipe, calculating costs and materials in home repair projects and countless other tasks—so it can be directly applied to our lives outside of school.

Another reason for beginning a solid foundation in algebra early is that your child will have learned geometry by the time he or she takes the PSAT. Developing skill at Algebra early on will help prepare them for the SAT/ACT college entrance exams.

We all know that math is a cumulative subject—each skill building on the last—so it’s important to keep those skills up during the summer months.  Students who solidify the concepts in their minds in preparation for the coming school year stand a much better chance of grasping the higher math concepts to come.

This is why we developed a summer program called Algebra 1 for Middle School Students. This 4-day camp is for boys and girls entering 7th and 8th grades, and is offered July 18-21 this year from 9am to 1pm (lunch included). As educators, we want all students to feel prepared for the coming academic year, and it’s rewarding to see a child’s eyes light up when they learn how to apply mathematics to the world around them. The Algebra 1 for Middle Students summer program takes the drudge out of math, and makes learning the concepts fun, competitive and challenging.

Is your son or daughter having a bit of difficulty with math this year? Would your child like to get a jump-start on the next school year? Find out more about our summer program by contacting Mrs.Acquesta@hermits.com. You can also Register Here!
