Winter Sports Teams Off to Strong Starts
Posted January 3rd, 2014
The Winter sports season at St. Augustine Prep has started with a bang. The Hermits Basketball team, which hosted the annual Hermit Alumni Christmas Basketball Tournament last week, is off to a 4-0 start this season behind a young and very talented team. You can read more about their impressive start here. The Hermits Basketball against perennial rival Middle Township, originally scheduled for tonight at 6:00 p.m, has been rescheduled for Thursday, January 16.
Meanwhile, the Hermits Ice Hockey team, which competes in the ultra-competitive Gordon Conference, has started the season 4-2. The Hermits were schedule to host Seton Hall Prep at the Igloo in Mount Laurel today at 4:30 p.m. That game has been cancelled. Read about the outlook for the Hermits Ice Hockey team here.
The Hermits Swim team is 4-0 and has defeated Cape Atlantic League challengers Egg Harbor Township and Mainland convincingly. The team is flush with versatile swimmers, and has good depth across all four classes. Hermits Swimming will host Salesianum on Wednesday, January 8.
The Hermits Wrestling team, a team whose preseason included an impressive addition to an already-stellar lineup, has also kicked-off the Winter season impressively. Sophomore Reid White recently won an 8-6 decision to earn the title in the 106-pound final of the Brick Memorial Mustang Classic tournament – one of the toughest such tournaments in the state. Two other Hermits Wrestlers were in the finals of their respective divisions of the tournament as well: James Bennett (Class of 2014) at 182 and Tom Lynd (Class of 2015) at heavyweight. The wrestling team had a quad-match scheduled for tomorrow which has been cancelled. You can read more about the promising start for the wrestling program here.
