Carry The Fire – Dan Hilferty – Class of 1974

Posted March 22nd, 2017

For the third edition of “Carry the Fire,” we are exceptionally proud to feature 1974 St. Augustine Prep graduate and 2014 Mendel Medal Award winner Daniel J. Hilferty!  Currently, Mr. Hilferty is the President and CEO of Independence Blue Cross, one of the largest health insurers in the country; he has served in this role since 2010.

In addition to his service to IBX, Mr. Hilferty is one of the more sought-after speakers in the country in addressing the areas of leadership, transforming health care, and the role of technology and big data.  His expertise has led him to appearances in national publications, such as the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal; he has also appeared on television media outlets, including MSNBC.  Dan is also among a select group of health care executives and thought leaders called upon by government to offer advice on implementing health care reform.  Recently, as seen below, he met with President Donald Trump along with several health care CEOs to discuss health care improvements and reform.  Of the meeting, Dan stated, “It was a very interesting meeting!  I am proud to represent my fellow Hermit Brothers.”

Public service is not lost on Mr. Hilferty, as he serves on numerous boards that benefit the greater Philadelphia area as well as the country.  Dan serves on the boards of the following associations: Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce; Catholic Foundation of Greater Philadelphia; FS Investment Corporation; America’s Health Insurance Plans; Tandigm Health; and BCS Financial.  In 2015, he served as co-chair on the executive leadership cabinet of the World Meeting of Families, which hosted the Holy Father, Pope Francis, in Philadelphia.

After graduating from the Prep, Mr. Hilferty went on to receive his bachelor’s degree from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, and his master’s degree from American University in Washington, D.C.  The St. Augustine Prep community is truly proud of Dan’s work not only in the field of business, but of his dedication to making the world a better place.  Thank you for setting a great example for all Hermits, Mr. Hilferty!
