Friday, November 9: A Day of Service

Over the past week, countless members of the St. Augustine Prep community have inquired with the school about the ways in which they can assist others, specifically those affected by Hurricane Sandy. To provide the opportunity for service, the Administration of St. Augustine Prep has deemed this Friday, November 9, a voluntary Day of Service for all of those students who are not attending the Open House. Every year, the date of Open House is a scheduled day off for students. It is the same this year. Students and their families are not required to participate in this Day of Service, we are simply calling those individuals who desire and are capable of donating their time and resources to those in need to participate in one of the following service projects:
The Office of Mission and Ministry has organized a transportation to and from St. Anne Catholic Church in Wildwood, which will be distributing disaster relief articles on Friday. The bus will leave St. Augustine Prep on Friday at 9:00 a.m. To participate in this event, students must complete a permission form which can be found at either main office on campus and returned to the main office by Thursday, November 8.
Here are four other ways that you can participate in the voluntary Day of Service on Friday:
Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Camden has announced that it has opened two disaster relief sites to benefit the affected residents in Cape May and Atlantic counties. These distribution centers will serve as coordination and dispersal sites for relief supplies. The relief sites will operate seven days per week until they are no longer needed, according to Catholic Charities Executive Director Kevin Hickey.
Locations of the relief sites are as follows:

Northfield, New Jersey
Hours of Operation: 12PM to 5PM daily
Notre Dame de la Mer Parish/St. Ann Church Campus (Father Michael Field)
3000 Atlantic Avenue
Wildwood, New Jersey
Hours of Operation: 10AM to 3PM daily
There are three ways in which you may assist in these efforts; Volunteer by calling the disaster relief phone line at 856-342-4185 or email catholiccharitiessandyrelief@camdendiocese.org. Bulk good donations can be made to the relief logistics coordinator, Jose Sanchez, at 856-426-2375. Monetary donations may be sent to the diocesan headquarters, care of Catholic Charities, Hurricane Sandy Relief, 1845 Haddon Avenue, Camden, New Jersey 08103.
Supplies needed include the following items:
Household Cleaners: Bleach, Laundry detergent, dish soap, counter and tile cleaners such as 409 or Tilex, Clorox Cleaning Wipes, Pine Sol, rubber gloves, and outdoor work gloves.
Personal Items: Towels and wash cloths, soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes, toothpaste, hand sanitizer, and lip balm.
Clothing Items: New socks for men, women, and children, gently used sweaters and coats, and gently used blankets.
Non-perishable food items: Water, canned fruit, baked beans, pasta in a can, tuna fish, spam, canned chicken, peanut butter, jelly, powdered milk, cereal, crackers, granola and cereal bars, and fruit juices.
St. Peter’s UMC at 8th and Central in Ocean City, NJ is providing meals all week and is in need of baked food donations of all kinds. The OC civic center is housed as the food pantry with plenty of cleaning supplies too. Just showing up to deliver boxes and meals from either St. Peter’s or the Ocean City Civic Center is an invaluable contribution.
OCNJCare.com will be up and running by tomorrow to accept tax deductible donations that will go directly to Ocean City residents and businesses in their efforts to recover. Many are without insurance coverage or have very limited coverage.
The Sovereign Avenue School in Atlantic City, NJ is in need of children’s clothing for the multitude of students there who lost much in the storm. The students have a particular need for school uniforms (tan and navy pants with white polos) for children of all sizes. Any children’s clothing would be appreciated as well. You can bring these clothing donations in to St. Augustine Prep and we will facilitate the transfer of these items to the Sovereign Avenue School in AC.
