St. Augustine Prep Rewarded for Green Power

Posted April 15th, 2014

In cooperation with Atlantic City Electric’s Green Power Connection program, St. Augustine Prep has earned an electric energy credit of 209,000 kilowatt-hours for the past year.  The electric company measures the power generated through Net Energy Metering and credits the school annually in March.  St. Augustine Prep has accumulated these credits by offsetting its demand for power from Atlantic City Electric with electric power produced by its own solar panels.

The Prep’s efforts to help preserve the environment by using solar resources have also resulted in substantial financial savings.  This year’s credit of over $11,000 translates into no electric charges for the Prep from Atlantic City Electric for approximately the next three months.  Solar energy provides about 60% of the school’s electrical needs at about one-third the cost of electrical power.

The partnership with Green Power Connection is now in its third year.  The Prep has 5,698 solar panels on two roof tops and in a large protected array behind the athletic fields.  In addition, energy efficient lighting has been installed over the last two years in Augustinian Hall and Rodio Gymnasium.
