Posted September 2nd, 2020

HIGH POINT. N.C. (Article courtesy of highpointpanthers.com) – High Point University men’s lacrosse head coach Jon Torpey announced the hiring of Bryce Young as director of operations on Wednesday, September 2nd.

“We are thrilled to welcome Bryce to the High Point Lacrosse Family, Coach Torpey said. “Bryce is one of the best young players in the world and has been a champion at every level. We spoke to Bryce’s coaches in college, high school, and in the pros and they all spoke about his passion, character, lacrosse IQ, and competitiveness. Our staff and players can’t wait for Bryce to come in and help take our program to new heights.”

Young was an elite player at the college level, he was a star defenseman for Maryland Under Head Coach John Tillman.

“Congratulations to Bryce on this position,” Coach Tillman said. “Bryce is a great asset to any program on and off the field. Bryce was a great leader for us and will do a great job of mentoring players to be successful on the lacrosse field but also in life. Bryce is a very hard worker and he has always been very invested to not only his development but to his team and teammate’s development. He has been successful on every level and to have a guy that has won championships at every level in your locker room, I think that’s fantastic, we all want guys like that. I know how hard the High Point guys work, I know the culture that Coach Torpey preaches so you are going to get a guy who preaches that same level of commitment and work ethic.”

Young and the Terps made it to the NCAA Championship game three out of his four years. Young won a national title with UMD in 2017 as a junior. He was selected as USILA All-American twice and was a captain for Maryland in 2018.

Young is currently a defender for the PLL Whipsnakes. Young was selected as a PLL All-Star in 2019 and has won back to back championships with the Whips under his defensive coordinator Mike Murphy.

“I am excited for the High Point men’s lacrosse program Bryce Young is not only one of the best defensemen in the world but he is a fabulous teacher of the game,” Murphy said. “He has a wonderful way about him. It is often difficult for great players to be great coaches because often times great players just let their abilities take over. Bryce is excellent at teaching the fundamentals of defense. He is a high IQ guy as well as a wonderful athlete. In our two years together, I continue to be amazed as I watch Bryce improve and grow as a player. I think he could be a rising star in the coaching ranks. I am excited to see what he does for the Panthers.”

Young is an Egg Harbor Township, NJ native, and attended St. Augustine Prep. Where he played for Coach JC Valore.

“Throughout his playing career, Bryce’s work ethic, competitiveness and team-first mentality have propelled him to success at every level that lacrosse has to offer, Coach Valore said. “As a coach, he not only brings those characteristics to the table but also an acute understanding of the game that goes well beyond that of most young coaches. His strong character and values ensure that he will make a strong impact both on and off the field.”
