Freshman Experience

Challenges of Freshmen Year-Devon Osgood, Class of 2018

Posted May 8th, 2015

My freshman year has been one of the best years of my life. Getting to start over and experience something new was an awesome experience, and it really opened my eyes. There was a good deal of work, but that is what I expect from any high school. My classes were definitely more difficult than they were in middle school and hundreds on tests were no longer routine. I like the challenge, and I think it is what made my freshman year more exciting. I had to do more to get the results, and it made getting those results more rewarding.

The most important thing I learned about myself was how I reacted to my first real failure when it came to school. I was quite surprised at how I responded to a bad test grade. Being a person who gets upset over low 90s test grades, I had never faced an actual failure. When I got the low grade, I realized that there was nothing that I could do about it at that time, and that all I could do was focus on the future. At the same time, I didn’t just forget about it; I used the failure to make myself work even harder. This allowed me to end up having success despite a low grade. The most outstanding thing about freshman year was the challenge that was presented and how tackling it made it memorable.
