Freshman Experience

First Weeks of School – Andrew Silver, Class of 2018

Posted January 26th, 2015

Over the course of the summer for football and through these first two weeks, I can proudly say I love this school and am proud to be a part of the Hermit brotherhood.  Everything about the school so far has appealed to me– the freedom, the food, the block schedule, but more importantly the amount the faculty and teachers care about and enjoy teaching at The Prep.  Every person I’ve met at The Prep is happy to be here and is here to work.  Through middle school and elementary school, I had a fair share of teachers who seemed miserable and seemed as though they wanted to go home as much as, or more than, the actual students.  I know for a fact that that’s not how the teachers are at The Prep.  They teach with so much enthusiasm, that I feel like I enjoy class and learn more than I ever have before.  When I have a teacher who teaches with heart, I pay attention much better than with a boring, monotonous teacher.  I can tell that over this last week, I am paying attention during class longer and losing focus much less than I ever have before.

My favorite thing about the school however, is the combination of the freedom, the block schedule, and the breaks that we receive throughout the day.  Throughout the day, I get hungry.  I mean, I’m a big growing kid and I have to eat.  The breaks that we receive give us the opportunity to do a lot of things during the day.  We can meet with teachers, we can get a jump start on our homework, and clearly get food throughout the day.  More often than not a small breakfast and a lunch won’t hold me over for the day, so a small snack between breakfast and lunch and between lunch and football holds me over until I can get dinner later that night.  This is only possible because of the freedom of being able to do whatever we want during our breaks.  All together, the freedom, the schedule, and the breaks allow some diversity to our day which I really like.  I absolutely loathe a daily repetition.  I can’t stand beginning every day with the same class and following the same schedule every day.  Sometimes I just really don’t want to start with bio or really don’t want to start with geometry.  The block schedule spices up the day.  Overall, I so far love being a student at The Prep and am more than excited for the years to come.
