Four Hermits to Play in Carpenter Cup

Posted June 11th, 2013

Four St. Augustine Prep baseball players have been chosen to play in the prestigious Carpenter Cup Classic later this month.  Christian Adorno, Barry Buchowski, Mike Elfreth, and Chris Oakley will represent the Tri-Cape (Tri-County and Cape Atlantic leagues), one of sixteen all-star teams from the tri-state area that will be competing in the tournament.  Hermit head baseball coach Mike Bylone will be one of the coaches for the Tri-Cape team.

This year the Carpenter Cup celebrates its 28th Anniversary. Developed in 1986 and named for former Philadelphia Phillies’ owners Bob and Ruly Carpenter, the Carpenter Cup Classic, which is recognized nationally as one of the finest baseball tournaments for high school students, is a vehicle to help promote the top area baseball players.  Each year more than 400 high school players from the tri-state area are able to showcase their skills in front of major league scouts and college/university coaches.

All members of the St. Augustine Prep Class of 2013, the Hermit players led this year’s Prep baseball team to the Non-Public A South Jersey finals. The four players are all committed to play baseball at the collegiate level:  Adorno at Wilmington University (Delaware), Buchowski at Tulane University, Elfreth at Widener University, and Oakley at the University of North Carolina.

The first game for the Tri-Cape team is on June 18, at 9:00 a.m., at Ashburn Field in FDR Park in South Philadelphia.  The final four teams in the tournament will play at Citizens Bank Park, the home of the Phillies.
