Hermits Basketball Brings Christmas Cheer to Holy Name Students
Submitted by Bro. David Graber, MSSCC
On Thursday, December 21, two buses full of Hermits rolled out of the school parking lot laden with Christmas treasures donated by the generous families of St. Augustine Prep.
Most of the toys were taken to Holy Name School in North Camden. For the past 30 years, the Prep has “adopted” the school. On Halloween, the younger kids are driven to the Prep, in costume, to spend a day of fun with their “big brothers”.
For this year’s Christmas toy distribution, each class eagerly walked into the church to select their gifts. The look of joy on their faces as they scrambled in to claim three toys of their choice was a moving experience for our Hermit volunteers. Each class also prepared customized “Thank you” posters to give to the St. Augustine varsity basketball scholar-athletes who donned Santa hats and helped the kids choose toys. Mrs. Margaret Kent, Holy Name principal, was deeply touched by the school’s annual generosity and mentioned the Brotherhood truly brightened the Christmas holiday for their students.
Enough toys were donated by the Prep community to allow for additional gifts to be taken to the Neighborhood Center, operated by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chestnut Hill. Sister Bonnie McMenamin, SSJ was beyond grateful and mentioned that the extra toys would be immediately distributed to needy families throughout South Jersey.
The Office of Mission & Ministry is profoundly grateful to everyone who contributed to spreading the spirit of Caritas (Love) this Christmas. Your efforts have truly made this a memorable holiday season!
