National Geographic Author Addresses Prep Students

Posted November 2nd, 2012

Mr. Bryan Christy, author of the cover story for the October 2012 edition of National Geographic, addressed the entire senior class and Ms. Wink’s Photojournalism class on October 25.  Mr. Christy spoke about the topic of his article “Blood Ivory,” which deals with the world-wide illegal ivory trade that results in the slaughter of thousands of elephants each year.  He told of his undercover investigations in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific islands which uncovered a vast network of elephant poaching in Africa and illegal importation of ivory in several countries.  Much of the contraband is used for the carving of religious articles, especially in China and the Philippines.  In addition to describing his journalism efforts, Mr. Christy urged the students to seek a career that will ignite their passions.

This year, Prep teachers have been encouraged to invite guest speakers to discuss topics being covered in their classes. Mr. Christy, a South Jersey native, generously volunteered his time as a part of this program.
