Spirit Club to Support Sled Hockey Team

Posted January 13th, 2012

The Spirit Club will be cheering for a team that is not the St. Augustine Prep Hermits next Saturday, January 21. They will still be rooting for one of their own, however. Senior Keith Shelton plays for the Vineland Sled Stars, a sled ice hockey team which is part of a six-team Atlantic Sled Hockey League. Sled hockey is a sport that is played according to many of the same rules as ice hockey. The players, however, are not standing and skating across the ice as they are in traditional ice hockey. They are seated on aluminum sleds fitted with skate blades. Keith Shelton has been playing the sport since he was 6 years old.

Keith was born with an undiagnosed muscle disease, and when he is not shooting pucks from the seat of his sled, he relies on a motorized wheelchair to move around. He has expressed appreciation for the support of the Spirit Club, telling The Daily Journal, “It’s awesome for them to take time to come out and watch me play hockey. Hearing them yell makes me work harder.”

Next Saturday will mark the fourth consecutive year that the Richland Rowdies have shown support for their Hermit brother by doing what they do best. The Spirit Club is inviting all members of the Prep community to attend the game next Saturday, January 21 at 11:10 AM.
